i just landed at o'hare airport. i got in the cab line and the first have to come up, there was a driver and a man wearing a turban. i got inside and sat down and look at his name. he was from a suburb of chicago. this was three months after 9/11 and i said how is it going for you? he said ok. i said people giving you any grief for problems because of the way you dress? sure, he said, some people are mean, but not many. most people are just fine. i said i'm glad it's going well for you. he said let me show you something. he reached down and pulled down by the passenger side. there is a picture of young american soldier. he said this is my son, michael. he's in the special forces of the united states army. i'm not sure where he is. this was right after 9/11. i think he may be in afghanistan. his brother is going to enlist in the marine corps. i told that story a dozen times, and sure because it struck me as a definitive story about who we are as americans and the prejudice of some people ignores the reality of the fac
